Back Bay Block Captains Helpful Tips to Reduce Package Thefts

The Back Bay neighborhood has made significant strides in reducing package thefts with improved delivery handling. However, with the holiday season here, theft risks tend to rise.
Here are some practical tips to reduce the chances of falling victim to would-be thieves:
- Set Delivery Reminders – After placing your order, immediately create a calendar reminder for the delivery date. This ensures you can monitor the delivery time and retrieve your package promptly.
- Alert Recipients for Shipped Gifts – If sending directly to a recipient, let them know the expected delivery date or consider using a carrier hold location or lockbox for added security.
- Enable Real-Time Tracking – Sign up for mobile notifications and text alerts to track your package in real-time. Make it a priority to monitor closely on the delivery day.
- Be Present or Plan for Help – If possible, ensure you or someone you trust will be home to receive the package. Alternatively, ask a neighbor to watch for your delivery and bring it inside.
- Utilize Carrier Drop-Off Locations – If you can’t be home, arrange for delivery to a nearby carrier drop-off or pick-up location, such as USPS, FedEx, UPS, or Amazon lockers.
- Leave Specific Delivery Instructions – Contact the carrier or leave instructions for packages to be placed in a secure or less visible location, like behind a planter or near a side door.
- Ship to a Safe Alternative Location – Consider shipping packages to your workplace or a local business where someone can sign for them. Some small businesses, like hair salons, may agree to hold packages for you.
- Help Protect Others’ Deliveries – If you notice a package sitting exposed on a neighbor’s doorstep, ring their doorbell to alert them or bring the package inside (with their permission) until they return home. Always retrieve any packages outside your building, even if they’re not yours, to reduce theft risk.
- Avoid Mailing Cash or Gift Cards – Theft from USPS mailboxes has been reported. Avoid mailing cash or gift cards, as they are highly vulnerable to theft.
- Install Home Security Features – Install doorbell cameras or outdoor security cameras to deter thieves and monitor deliveries. Many devices allow you to speak to delivery personnel or track packages in real-time.
- Use Package Insurance – For valuable items, consider purchasing insurance to protect against loss or theft during transit.
