Castellani Memorial Tree

Trees and grass in the middle of Commonwealth Ave with the street, parked cars, and Back Bay buildings behind them

Some of you may know that Vic Castellani, a long-time protector of our neighborhood, died in Connecticut earlier this year.

NABB would like to dedicate a tree on the Mall in honor of his work, and that of his wife Marianne. NABB is raising $5,000 to pay for the tree planting and plaque.

Vic and Marianne moved into the Back Bay in 1976. They became active members of NABB in 1989, and remained so until a few years ago, when they moved to Connecticut to be with family for health reasons. The couple was awarded the Mary Natale Citizenship award in 2005.

Vic was a constant presence in NABB for over 30 years. Perhaps his most enduring contribution was as the author and advocate for the City’s creation of the Boston Groundwater Trust in 1986. By monitoring pilings across the city, and identifying leaks and other problems, the Trust has undoubtedly saved many buildings throughout our neighborhood and the whole City.

For years Vic was Chair (and often sole member) of NABB’s Zoning Advisory Committee. He was always available for consultation and testifying at zoning hearings affecting our neighborhood. Without Vic’s intellect, perseverance, and knowledge of Boston’s arcane zoning rules, Back Bay would look much different today.

Marianne served as both President and Chair of NABB in the 1980s (She was one of only two people to hold both offices.) She was very involved in securing much-needed overnight resident-only parking on the cross streets from Dartmouth to Hereford. She was also very active on licensing issues, often working closely with Vic
