On April 29, the NABB Green Committee hosted a virtual presentation by the Charles River Watershed Association led by Executive Director Emily Norton, “The Flood Next Time: Reducing Pollution, Mitigation Flooding”. The slides from the presentation provide insights into the history and ongoing activities by Boston and organizations on how to manage and treat water and to combat the pollution caused by earlier industrial activities. There are currently new challenges as a result of increasingly intense and frequent events (rainstorms) as well as the rise in sea levels caused by the warming of our planet.

The structure of Back Bay (like Venice) is unusually dependent on water in one respect. Too much water in our neighborhood results in flooding, while too little (the water table falls below some level) will lead to erosion of the pilings on which our buildings rest, and hence damage which would ultimately result in their collapse.

If you want to better understand one of the most critical factors that will affect the future of Back Bay and our region, and what we can and should be doing, these slides are an invaluable source of information and food for thought.
