Block Captains of Back Bay

Purpose

The Block Captains of Back Bay is a revitalized Committee that originated in the late 1970s through the 1980s. Its mission is to help streamline activities on a variety of quality of life (QOL) concerns regarding cleanliness, safety, and communications with city departments that provide infrastructure services.

What We Do

The Block Captains of Back Bay is a group of volunteers, each of whom is responsible for the four sides of a city block. A Block Captain regularly patrols their respective block and uses city services such as BOS:311 (Mayor’s Hotline), Inspectional Services Department (ISD), Code Enforcement (CE), and non-emergency police and fire to report any areas of concern or violations. Examples could include illegal trash disposal, abandoned bicycles, and reporting rodent activity. Emergency 911 will be used and recommended for all neighborhood observations involving crime, fire, parking violations, homelessness, property damage and any accidents involving motor vehicle, moped/eScooter, e-bikes, bicycles, bike lanes and/or pedestrians.

The Block Captains meet monthly to share ideas and celebrate making Back Bay the best place it can for all its residents and are dedicated to helping preserve the safety, cleanliness, and ambiance of our wonderful neighborhood.

Boston’s Trash Management Initiatives

Trash Collection

Resident Trash Responsibilities
A couple of key highlights:

  • Ideally, each residence should purchase their own outdoor garbage barrels
  • and place directly behind their residence and pull to curb on trash days.
  • Wait until after 5 p.m. the evening before your collection day to bring
containers curbside to avoid spillage and code violations.
  • If trash bags are being used, they should be 2 ply or .9 millimeter or greater
plastic material. CVS or Grocery bags are not acceptable as they are too thin,
more permeable and attract more rodents.
  • Please do NOT place trash bags at the mouths (entry and exit points of the
Public Alleys). Place all garbage directly behind your residence, and move
to curbside closest to trash pick-up times, if possible.

Recycling

The City of Boston differentiates its recycling services and regulations based on the number of units in a building.

Food Waste and Compost Programs

Zero Waste Initiatives

  • Zero Waste Boston – how Boston is working to reducing, repairing, and reusing the materials in our lives
  • Zero Waste Directory – how to discard batteries, other household items
  • Mattress Recycling
For buildings with 7 or fewer units:
The City of Boston collects mattresses and box springs at most residential addresses (limit pickups to 10 items per calendar year).Residents who live in buildings with 7+ units will need to speak with their management company on how to recycle their mattress. There are many local mattress haulers that service large residential buildings. Here are some local mattress recyclers
