Licensing & Building Use

Purpose

The Licensing and Building Use (LBU) Committee evaluates the potential impact of new or proposed changes in business licenses and of applications for commercial zoning relief.

What We Do

The LBU Committee meets monthly to listen to applicants who need to appear before the Boston Licensing Board or Zoning Board of Appeal (ZBA). In particular, we evaluate new restaurants, liquor stores, cannabis dispensaries, and any business serving food.

Issues of prime concern to the committee include the effects of trash, litter, hours of operation, noise, lines, traffic, deliveries, parking and public safety. The LBU Committee strives to negotiate conditions that protect abutters and the neighborhood from adverse impacts, while also allowing business to go forward, because one of the reasons we love Back Bay is that we have a variety of active restaurants and businesses just a short walk away.

A representative of the LBU Committee attends most hearings before the city licensing and zoning boards to confirm NABB’s position. The committee also advises the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, our District City Councilor, and Councilors at Large of NABB’s position on each application.

When We Meet
The first Monday of each month at 7 PM via Zoom.
